What is Hepatitis B?

This is a virus that can cause inflammation of the liver, which is an organ which carries out hundreds of jobs vital for life. The inflammation can cause scarring, and may lead to liver failure after many years.
Many people have no symptoms, or only a mild illness, and do not know they have the virus, which is very infectious. There is a vaccine that can prevent Hepatitis B.

What is Hepatitis C?

Like Hepatitis B, this virus attacks the liver. Most people have no symptoms, and do not realise they are infected, until they become ill in later life.

How to keep safe

You cannot tell by looking at someone if they have one of these viruses, so always use a condom for vaginal, anal and oral sex.
Never share any drug equipment.
Needle exchanges are available throughout the region.
Never share personal items such as razors, or tooth brushes.
