Emergency contraception

There are two main types of emergency contraception:

1. Hormonal / Emergency Pills
   There is now only one type of hormonal contraception called Levonelle which is a Progestogen only pill. These come in a pack of two pills. The two tablets are taken as soon after unprotected intercourse as possible and not later than 72 hours. It is more effective if taken within 24 hours.
   
   
2. The Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUD) or Coil
   This can be inserted up to 5 days after unprotected sex and is over 99% effective. It will also give you ongoing contraception.

• Your GP
• Any Family Planning and Sexual Health clinic
• Accident and Emergency
• All pharmacies, if you're over 13 years of age

17 March 2009 - As part of the new pharmacy contract, all 33 community pharmacies across Dumfries & Galloway now offer free postal testing kits for Chlamydia and free emergency hormone contraception (EHC) to those 13 years of age and above.
